A few notes on brushing..

Posted on 11/13/2017

As a basic rule, we ONLY recommend that our patients use a SOFT or ULTRA SOFT brush! Brushing with hard bristles can actually cause gum recession. The Sonicare toothbrush is our go to recommendation for all of our patients, and because it works so efficiently, our paitents don't feel the need to "scrub brush" with a medium brush any longer. The sonicare basically does all of the work for you! It has 31,000 vibrations per minute that work to destroy gum disease and decay causing bacteria. It effectively removes plaque in hard to reach areas like crowns, implants, veneers, orthodontic fixtures, and much more.

Most patients equate brushing to healthy beautiful white teeth and healthy gums...and most of the time they would be correct! However, there are a few select times when that isn't the case.

Did you know that there are times that your dental hygienists DO NOT want you to brush your teeth?? Yes it is TRUE!
If you are sick and vomiting it is actually best to not brush your teeth right away. You should swish with water immediately and wait about 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. The reason for this is because after vomiting the
pH in your mouth turns to an acidic state which weakens your enamel. Therefore, you would not want to brush your enamel with acidic substances while it is already in a weak state because that will just cause your teeth to break down. The same rule applies after eating sugary food/beverages. (you don't want to brush that sugar onto your weakened enamel.) So remember, SWISH, SWISH, SWISH!
